LOCATION

Turkey is geographically extends over two continents. Anatolia, the Asian part of Turkey's territory, is about 97% of the area. The European part is the eastern Thrace, it comprises about 3% of the country (23,623 square kilometers).

The country borders Turkey have a total length of approximately 9,850 km, of which 7,200 km from the sea bounds. In western Turkey, the Aegean Sea, the Mediterranean south and the north the Black Sea. Turkey also agrees with eight neighbouring countries border with a total length of 2,648 km. In the north-west it is bordered to Greece (206 km border) and Bulgaria (240 km), in the north-east Georgia (252 km), Armenia (268 km), Azerbaijan (exclave and autonomous Republic of Czechoslovakia Nachi Evan, 9 km), in the east to Iran (499 km) and to the south of Iraq (352 km) and Syria (822 km). The politically divided island of Cyprus with the Republic of Cyprus and the internationally unrecognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are also not far from the Turkish coast.

Especially the north of Turkey is one of the most seismic regions of the world and in recent years repeatedly shaken by earthquakes. Since a certain chronological east-west sequence of earthquakes in northern Turkey must be established, experts do believe that in the foreseeable future İstanbul also by a large quake could be shaken. The last major quake in the province of Kocaeli were less than 100 km from Istanbul.
